Back In The Saddle Again
We were honored to meet Nikeela Black Abrams and provide her a FreeWheel. Nikeela is an amazing person who embodies what LIMBitless means.
Nikeela attended and graduated from law school at U of I, then moved to Idaho to ride races as a horse jockey. Racing was her passion and practicing law was her second job.
She rode races professionally for 14 years and did remarkable well, so much in fact that she has the highest win percentage of any North American jockey with 500 mounts or more.
She opened her own legal and mediation practice in July of last year. She says, "After a very successful racing season, I was riding the last meet of the year at Blackfoot Idaho. In a four horse race I got cut off in the turn and my horse fell with me. I sustained multiple injuries including a lacerated eye socket, broken nose, degloved chin, broken neck (C1, C2, C4, C5) collapsed lung and burst fractured T8 (spinal cord injury). I was life flighted to Salt Lake and then rehabbed at Craig Hospital in Denver."
In reality, she is exceptionally lucky to be alive. Her surgery alone was almost 12 hours. When she visited us at Back Forty Farms, it was just about 10 months after the accident.
She returned home in November and has been adjusting to her new life ever since. She told us that she would be lost without the support of her husband, family and friends. They have a farm and 13 horses.
Even after the accident she has ridden a few times, and plans on riding more regularly once she secures proper equipment, and she also looks forward to returning to her mediation practice. You can visit her business website by clicking here.
Even more exciting is now that she has her own FreeWheel, she is going to be participating in the upcoming 2019 Limbitless Challenge - Table Rock Ascent. We invite you to participate and enjoy an incredible day and meet Nikeela too.
You can sign up as a participant or volunteer by clicking here or the below, and we recommend getting signed up as time is running out. Remember, anyone in a wheelchair who participates will receive a FreeWheel, at no cost!
